A coffee shop with an audio-equipment-obsessed owner!
Located behind Yaeshima Park (next to the Okinawa Civic Center) sitting in the midst of a residential district is Hibiki, an old U.S. military residential house converted into a retro coffee shop.
The owner--Mr. Sugama, who originally lived the life of a white-collar city office worker--always had a love and a knack for tinkering with audio equipment. As his interest in his hobby intensified, he wanted a place to share his original sound with everyone. This inspired him to retire from his job in 2009 and open Hikbiki (which means “sound” in Japanese).
Mr. Sugama also wanted to create a place where baby boomers, like himself, could hang out during the day and enjoy listening to music from their generation.
The familiar atmosphere of Hibiki is what gets customers hooked, and many being baby boomers themselves and having things in common with Mr. Sugama only adds to the enjoyable experience of Hibiki.
Hibiki serves Okinawa City’s famous Yoshimoto Coffee’s Koza Blend, complete with the cake-of-the-day for a fair price of ¥400.
Enjoy a cup of Koza coffee while listening to classical music flowing out of Mr. Sugama’s original audio equipment.
