Yellow curry packed with nostalgic flavors of Okinawa.
Enogu sits right in front of Okinawa City’s Goya bus stop. They're frequented by regular patrons from the local community ever since they opened. Originally a gallery and café, Enogu slowly changed into an izakaya after receiving many requests to serve alcohol.
The owner, Uehara, who originally ran an art supply store, opened Enogu wanting to create a place where artists could display their works of art and hold solo exhibitions.
Then there’s Hoope Curry, Enogu’s yellow curry, which they also serve for lunch. For the Okinawans, the flavor of yellow curry is a taste of the past when the island was under U.S. military rule. During these times curry paste was not available in stores and Okinawans improvised their own instant curry paste using curry powder and spices from the U.S. military and mixing it with flour. It’s not the conventional curry most people may be used to, but it’s definitely worth trying and you're guaranteed to love it!
Enogu opened a women-only hostel (Dormitory Palette Koza) on their 2nd floor in April 2014. If you’re visiting from far away, please take the opportunity to stay with Palette Koza (reservations required).
